California OSHA (Title 8, Section 3396) requires employers to provide indoor heat illness prevention training when workplace temperatures can exceed 82 degrees Fahrenheit. This training is essential for workplaces with environmental factors that can increase heat load on employees.

Who Needs This Training?

This training is mandatory for:

  • Businesses operating in California with indoor workspaces where temperatures exceed 82°F

  • Employers with facilities such as commercial kitchens, manufacturing facilities, or warehouses

  • Workplaces with heat-generating equipment or poor ventilation

Role-Specific Versions Available

We offer two versions of the training:

  • Supervisors Version: Comprehensive training covering management responsibilities and prevention strategies

  • Non-Supervisors Version: Basic training covering essential prevention and response procedures

How to Get Compliant

  1. Purchase Training Credits: Each assignment requires 1 credit ($10 per assignment, with bulk discounts available)

  2. Assign the Training: Work with your Customer Success Manager to set up automatic assignments for your team, ensuring everyone gets the correct version

  3. Upload Your Heat Prevention Plan: Upload your organization's Heat Prevention Plan to your Library and set Library Access rules so that it is available to all employees in the Opus Training app

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't have a Heat Prevention Plan yet?

  • You'll need to create one before implementing the training. We provide a template Heat Prevention Plan in the Resources section that you can customize for your business. Your Customer Success Manager can guide you through this process to ensure your plan meets Cal/OSHA requirements.

Do outdoor workers who occasionally work indoors need this training?

  • If workers primarily work outdoors but have access to indoor spaces, they should follow outdoor heat illness prevention guidelines. However, if they regularly work in indoor spaces that exceed 82°F, they should complete both indoor and outdoor heat illness prevention training.

What if our indoor temperature only exceeds 82°F occasionally?

  • If there's any possibility that indoor temperatures could exceed 82°F during normal operations, even occasionally, you should implement the training. This ensures compliance and protects workers during those high-temperature periods.

How often do employees need to retake this training?

  • While Cal/OSHA requires initial training, it's recommended to provide refresher training annually and whenever:

  • There are changes to your heat prevention procedures

  • New heat-generating equipment is introduced

  • An incident occurs

  • Supervisors observe a need for reinforcement

What if we have multiple locations with different temperature conditions?

  • You should assign the training to employees at any location where indoor temperatures could exceed 82°F. Each location should have its own Heat Prevention Plan that addresses its specific conditions and hazards. You can manage multiple plans through the Opus library with location-specific access settings.

Does this cover Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention training?

  • No. This training specifically covers indoor heat illness prevention requirements. Outdoor heat illness prevention is a separate training requirement with different guidelines and temperature thresholds.
