Edit your training videos right in the dashboard. Cut out mistakes, join clips with transitions, add captions, a voiceover, or background music, then save the result in place of the original.
✅ Before you start: You can edit uploaded videos up to 10 minutes long in a recent version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari. YouTube and Vimeo links can't be edited.
Table of Contents:
Open the Video Editor
Click Edit video on the video you want to change:
Courses and Modules: Select the screen with the video, then click Edit video on the right. You can also hover over the video on the screen.
Check-ins: Select the step or header with the video, then click Edit video on the right.
Resources: Open the video Resource and click Edit video on the Overview tab.
The editor opens full screen. Your video plays in the middle, the timeline sits below it, and the panel on the right has four tabs:
Videos: Add more clips to join them into one video.
Captions: Put text on top of the video.
Voiceover: Write or record narration.
Music: Generate or upload background music.
The timeline has a track for each part of your video: Video, Captions, Original sound, Voiceover, and Music. Click a track's name to open its tab. The sound tracks also have a speaker button to mute them while you edit.
Edit Your Clips
Click the times along the top of the timeline to jump to the moment you want to change. A line marks that moment, and the video shows its frame.
Then use the buttons above the timeline:
Trim: Drag either end of a clip on the timeline to shorten it.
Split: Click Split to cut the clip in two at that moment. To remove a part from the middle, split on both sides of it, select it, and click Delete.
Freeze frame: Click Freeze frame to pause on the frame you're looking at. Set how long it shows in Show this frame for (seconds).
Reorder: Drag a clip along the Video track.
Select a clip to change it in the panel on the right:
Speed: Drag the Speed slider to play the clip from a quarter of its speed up to 4× as fast.
Sound: Change Sound volume, or turn on Mute this clip's sound.
Copy or remove: Click Duplicate or Remove.
Join Several Videos
Open the Videos tab and click Upload a video, or From your library to pick a video Resource. Then drag a video onto the timeline, or click Add to put it at the end.
💡 Undo a change: Click Undo at the top of the editor, or press Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on a Mac).
Add Transitions
Select a clip, then choose how it starts in Transition from the clip before:
Cut: Go straight to the clip.
Fade through black: The clip before fades to black, then this clip fades in.
Dissolve: The clip before blends into this one.
Wipe: This clip wipes in from the left edge.
Set how long it takes in Transition length (seconds).
To fade in at the start, select the first clip and choose Fade through black in Start of the video. To fade out at the end, select the last clip and turn on Fade to black at the end.
Add Captions
Put text on the video, like the name of a step or a safety reminder. Captions become part of the picture, so everyone sees them.
Jump to the moment the caption should appear.
Click Add caption above the timeline, or open the Captions tab and click Add caption here.
Type the words in Text.
To change when the caption shows, drag it along the Captions track, or drag either end to make it longer or shorter.
Choose how it looks in the Captions tab:
Font: Sans, Serif, Mono, or Bold.
Color: Pick one of six colors.
Size and Position: S, M, or L, at the Top, Middle, or Bottom of the video.
Background: Box puts a band behind the text, Outline draws an edge around the letters, and Shadow adds a soft shadow.
Animation: Fade, Rise, Pop, or Typewriter, which types the words out. Choose None to show the caption without one.
💡 Set the style once: A new caption copies the style of the one you selected, or of your last caption.
Add a Voiceover
Write what the narrator should say and Opus creates the voice, or record your own.
Jump to the moment the narration should start.
Open the Voiceover tab and click Add a line.
Type what the narrator should say.
Click Create voice.
To add a whole script at once, click Paste a script and put each line on its own row. The lines are placed one after another, starting at the moment you're on. Then click Create voice on each line, or click Create voice for N lines at the top of the list to create them all at once.
To use your own voice, click Record my own voice on a line. The video plays from just before the line so you can time your voice to it. Pause the video or click Stop recording when you're done.
Every voice you create or record is kept as a version. Choose the one to use under Versions.
💡 Line sounds rushed? Shorten the words, or drag the end of the line on the timeline to give it more room.
Add Background Music
Open the Music tab.
Pick a feel: Warm, Upbeat, Focused, Cinematic, or Calm. You can also describe the music you want, like “light jazz”.
Click Generate music. This can take a few minutes, and you can keep editing while you wait.
To use your own track instead, click Upload your own music. A track shorter than your video repeats to fill it.
Music gets quieter whenever the voiceover plays. To keep it at one level, turn off Lower under voiceover. Use the Volume slider to set how loud it is.
💡 Changed the video after adding music? Click Update to fit on the track so the music matches the new length.
Save Your Video
Your edits save as a draft while you work, so you can close the editor and come back later. The original video doesn't change until you save.
Click Save video in the top right corner.
Choose a Quality: Best quality, or Smaller file to load faster on slow connections.
Click Save video.
Opus combines your clips, transitions, captions, voiceover, and music into one video and uses it in place of the original. To make more changes later, click Edit video again. Your timeline opens just as you left it.
⚠️ Translated videos: If a video Resource has a different video for other languages, saving replaces them all with your edited video.
Check the Subtitles
When you save, Opus creates new subtitles for your edited video, including any voiceover. This can take a few minutes. Subtitle edits you made to the original video don't carry over, so check them after you save.
Captions you add in the editor are part of the picture, so they aren't in the subtitles. Team members see captions whether or not they turn on subtitles.
Open the video, then click Edit subtitles next to Edit video.
Click a timestamp to play that part of the video, then fix the text below it.
Click Save.
Only English subtitles can be edited. Opus translates your changes into the other languages your business uses. Learn more in How to Manage Video Subtitles.
FAQ
Why can't I edit my video?
The editor works with uploaded video files up to 10 minutes long. YouTube and Vimeo links can't be edited, and a longer video needs to be trimmed before you upload it.
Can my finished video be longer than 10 minutes?
Yes. The limit applies to each video you add, so you can join several videos into a longer one.
Why does it say my browser can't create videos?
Saving builds the video in your browser. Use a recent version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
What happens if I close the editor without saving?
Your edits stay as a draft, and the original video stays in place. Click Edit video again to pick up where you left off, then click Save video to use your edits.
Why does the other clip pause during a dissolve or wipe?
The editor blends with a still frame: the last frame of the clip before, or the first frame of the next clip. Keep transitions short so the pause isn't noticeable.
