California Workplace Violence Prevention Training (Non-Supervisor & Supervisor)

California's Senate Bill 553 (SB 553) mandates that virtually all employers in the state develop and implement a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). To help you train your team quickly and effectively, Opus has teamed up with Modern Training and Fox-Rothschild LLP to provide a CA Workplace Violence Prevention Training.

With this premium training module, you get:

  • California Version: We offer a version for California that covers all state-required training mandates.

  • Non-Supervior + Supervisor Trainings: We have created versions for both non-supervisors and supervisors.

  • 15-minutes to complete: Aligned with Fox Rothschild LLP legal standards, this module is designed to be comprehensive and keep labor dollars low.

  • Policy Attestation: We include an acknowledgment field to meet the attestation requirement of your Workplace Violence Prevention training.

  • Interactive quizzes: Like all training in Opus, quiz questions are included throughout the training to engage employees and drive knowledge retention.

  • Pricing: The module is available for 1 credit per assignment ($10, with bulk discounts available).

Compliance Requirements

To comply with SB 553, businesses must take several critical steps:

  1. Develop a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP): This plan must outline specific procedures for identifying and evaluating workplace violence hazards, reporting and investigating incidents, and emergency response protocols.

    1. If you don’t have a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, you can use a template provided by the State of California Dept. of Industrial Relations.

  2. Employee Training: Employers must provide initial and annual training to all employees, covering essential topics related to workplace violence prevention and response.

  3. Workplace Violence Prevention Incident Log: Employers must keep a record of all workplace violence incidents for a minimum of five years.

Module Overview

Opus’ CA Workplace Violence Prevention module helps you meet the employee training requirements of SB 553.

  • Important: SB 553 also requires that your CA Workplace Violence Prevention Plan(s) is uploaded into Opus as a resource and made available to all CA-based employees via Library Access or assignment. The training module will refer to your Workplace Violence Prevention Plan so it’s imperative that the plan is uploaded prior to assignment. In the training module, employees will be asked to attest that they’ve read the policy by answering a short response “Yes” or “No” question.

The training covers the following key areas:

  • Recognizing behaviors of concern

  • Identifying triggers of workplace violence

  • Addressing domestic violence at work

  • Understanding employer-specific workplace violence hazards

  • Reporting workplace violence concerns

  • Investigating workplace violence incidents

  • Employing de-escalation techniques

  • Responding to workplace violence

  • Maintaining the required incident log

  • Following employer-specific emergency procedures

  • Reviewing key elements of the employer’s WVPP

  • Understanding the definitions and requirements under SB 553

For Supervisors, the module covers the training topics listed above, with an emphasis on the business impact of proper Workplace Violence Prevention training and a more detailed overview of how to manage the incident log.

The deadline for California employers to implement a compliant plan and complete the first round of annual training for employees is July 1, 2024.

California Senate Bill 553 (SB 553) is designed to enhance workplace safety by requiring proactive measures to identify and mitigate the risks of workplace violence.

How does Opus affirm employees have read the Workplace Violence Prevention Plan?

In the module, employees will be asked to confirm that they’ve read and reviewed your company-specific plan by filling out a “yes” or “no” question. This question will serve as the policy attestation that the employee has reviewed the resource in their library. See below for a preview of how this will be surfaced to trainees.

How will the module reference my company’s Workplace Violence Prevention Plan?

What if my company doesn’t have a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan?

You can use a template provided by the State of California Dept. of Industrial Relations. Cal/OSHA has also created a model workplace violence prevention plan for employers to use as a starting point.

Can I pull reports to see who has completed this training?

Yes! In Opus, you have access to a compliance reporting dashboard so that you can easily track training completion. You’ll also have access to in-depth analytics that show accuracy scores, feedback, and completion overtime.

How often does this training have to be done?

All employees must complete this training annually.

Are there separate versions for supervisors and non-supervisors?
