Self-directed Check-ins let a Trainee complete a skill check on their own — no facilitator needed. Use them when you want Trainees to confirm a skill or completion themselves.
With a facilitated Check-in, a Manager or facilitator meets with the Trainee, submits the form on their behalf, and marks them as passed or failed. Self-directed flips that: the Trainee fills out and submits the form themselves, with no facilitator involved. It auto-completes as soon as it's submitted — there's no review step or pass/fail decision.
❓ Self-directed Check-ins don't support pass/fail outcomes. If your Check-in needs a Passing Requirement, use a facilitated Check-in instead.
How to Create a Self-Directed Check-in
Here's how to build a self-directed Check-in:
Create a new Check-in:
Head to a Module in the dashboard and select "Add Content" and then "Check-In."
Alternatively, go to "Check-ins" in the "Library" and click "New Check-in." From there, add your Check-in to any Module.
Build your Check-in: In the Build tab of the Check-in, add a name, description, and verification steps.
Use the "Add step" buttons to build out your form. Step types include Yes/No, Text, Multiple Choice, Rating, and more.
Set it as self-directed: Click the "Facilitated" button in the top-right to open the mode dialog. Select "Self-directed" and click "Save."
Publish: Click "Publish" to make the Check-in available for assignment.
💡 You can also change this setting later under Manage → Settings, where you'll find a Self-Directed toggle. You can turn any existing facilitated Check-in into a self-directed one!
How to Complete a Self-Directed Check-in
When a Trainee opens a self-directed Check-in from their assignments, they're taken straight to the verification form to fill out and submit.
Once submitted, the Check-in marks complete automatically — there's no Manager review step or pass/fail decision.
Self-directed Check-ins appear in the same places as facilitated ones:
Inside a Module: Open an assigned Module, tap the Check-in, and you're taken straight to the verification form to fill out and submit.
App home screen: The pending Check-ins section includes any self-directed Check-ins not yet completed. Tap to go directly to the form.

When to Use Self-Directed Check-ins
Self-directed works best when you don't need a Manager present to verify the skill. It's a good fit for Trainees who have foundational knowledge and don't need external sign-off. A few common situations include:
Self-assessments: the Trainee confirms they've completed something on their own, like reviewing a policy or finishing a task.
When a Manager isn't available for review: useful for busy locations or teams spread across multiple sites.
Routine confirmations: things that don't need to be observed, like acknowledging a new procedure or confirming equipment is set up.
Reflections before or after training: a simple check-in to help Trainees think through what they're about to learn or what they took away from a session.
Best Practices
If the skill needs to be witnessed or you're tracking compliance, use a facilitated Check-in instead.
Keep your steps simple. Yes/No and checkbox steps work best when there's no facilitator in the room to clarify questions.
Link relevant content to the Check-in so Trainees have everything they need to complete it on their own.
Consider pairing a self-directed Check-in with a facilitated one later if you want a more formal sign-off down the line.
