Getting Started: Opus MCP

This article explains how to connect Claude or ChatGPT to Opus.

Written by Ben Brunken

The Opus AI Connector lets an AI assistant you already use, like Claude or ChatGPT, securely talk to your business's Opus data.

Think of it as having a training manager sitting next to you. It already knows your Locations, Roles, Library, and assignments, and it asks before changing anything important.

Once connected, you can ask questions in plain language and the assistant will look up live Opus data and, if you allow it, make changes on your behalf. It only sees what you can already see in Opus, and it can only do what you can already do.

The connector uses a standard called MCP (Model Context Protocol). You add Opus as a custom connector in Claude or ChatGPT and sign in.

šŸ’” This is different from Ask Opus. Ask Opus is the in-app search tool your team uses on the floor. The AI Connector is for Admins and Managers who want to work with Opus from Claude or ChatGPT.

Table of Contents:

How Access and Permissions Work

The connector runs as you, and it acts on your behalf.

  • It can only see what you can already see in Opus.

  • It can only change what you can already change in Opus.

  • Inviting an Admin still requires you to be an Admin.

  • Opus treats publishing, assigning, or removing people as high-impact actions. The assistant confirms with you before those go through.

Your business's data stays in your Opus organization. The assistant only receives the information it needs to answer the current question or complete the current action.

šŸ’” This isn't a company-wide API key. Nobody else can use your connection, and it doesn't give the assistant access to other businesses' Opus accounts.

What the Connector Can and Cannot Do

It can

  • Answer questions about people, Locations, Roles, assignments, and reporting

  • List what's in your Library, including titles, descriptions, type, and whether something is published

  • Draft new Courses, Check-ins, Checklists, Documents, and Modules

  • Invite people and create Locations or Roles, if you granted write access

It cannot

  • Connect as a Trainee (Flagged below — please confirm this is the right term.)

  • See more than you can see, or do more than you can do

  • Pull the full slides, quiz questions, or media out of an existing Course (it can see the catalog and analytics, not the lesson itself)

  • Upload a video or PDF file. File uploads still happen in the Opus dashboard. It can turn text into a native Opus Doc.

  • Push training completions back to your HRIS or payroll system

  • Replace Ask Opus for your frontline team

🧠 Checklists, Audits, and Check-ins are different things in Opus. If you ask the assistant to "make a checklist," it creates a standalone Checklist, not a Check-in or a Module. If the result looks like the wrong type of content, don't publish it. Tell the assistant what you wanted and try again.

What You Can Do With Opus MCP

Look things up:

  • Who is past due on training, and at which Location

  • How a Location, Role, or person is doing on completion

  • What is in your Library (Courses, Modules, Check-ins, Checklists, Resources, etc.)

  • Who is on the roster, and which Roles and Locations they belong to

  • How adoption, engagement, and compliance look across your business

Get work done (only if you approve write access when you connect):

  • Draft a new Course, Check-in, Checklist, Document, or Module

  • Invite someone to Opus

  • Create a Location or Role

  • Assign training to the right people

New content stays a draft. Review it in Opus and publish it yourself when it looks right.

šŸŽÆ Example questions

  • "Who is past due on food safety at the downtown location?"

  • "Draft an opening checklist for the bar, then leave it as a draft for me to review."

  • "How is onboarding completion trending this month versus last month?"

  • "Invite Maya Chen as a Manager at Midtown, in the Shift Lead role."

Who Can Connect

You can connect if you are an Admin or Manager on an active Opus account. If you manage more than one organization, you will pick which one to connect during sign-in. Each connection is tied to one organization.

If you are later deactivated, or your access is changed so you are no longer an Admin or Manager, the connection stops working on its own. You do not need to revoke anything first.

šŸ’” Team members with Trainee access cannot connect.

How to Connect

You will need:

  • An Admin or Manager login for Opus

  • A Claude or ChatGPT account that allows custom connectors

The connector URL is: https://api.opus.so/mcp

Use that exact address. Don't add anything after /mcp.

Connect with Claude

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings.

  2. Open Connectors.

  3. Choose Add custom connector.

  4. Name it Opus.

  5. Paste https://api.opus.so/mcp as the server URL.

  6. Click Save, then click Connect.

  7. Sign in to Opus if asked.

  8. If you belong to more than one organization, select the one this connection should use.

  9. Read the access request, then click Allow access.

Claude's menus can vary slightly by plan. If you don't see Connectors, look under Settings for custom connectors or MCP, or ask your Claude workspace admin to allow custom connectors.

Connect with ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.

  2. Open Apps (or Connectors, depending on your plan).

  3. Add a custom app / MCP server.

  4. Name it Opus.

  5. Paste https://api.opus.so/mcp as the server URL.

  6. Click Connect, then sign in to Opus.

  7. Select your organization if asked.

  8. Read the access request, then click Allow access.

On a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise plan, a workspace admin may need to allow custom apps before you can add Opus. If Connect is greyed out or says "Disabled by admin," ask your workspace admin to enable custom apps.

What you will see when you sign in

Opus opens a Connect to Opus screen.

  • If the assistant only asked for read access, it can look up progress, completions, your Library, and your team roster. It cannot make changes.

  • If the assistant asked for write access, it can also invite people, create Locations, Roles, and training content, and assign training, but only things you can already do in Opus. Opus records every change against your account.

If you only want the assistant to answer questions, cancel and reconnect when it asks for read-only access. If you want it to draft content or invite people, allow write access.

šŸ’” You'll be sent back to Claude or ChatGPT after you click Allow access. The next time you start a chat, turn the Opus connector on and start asking.

Tips for Asking Good Questions

  • Be specific about the Location, Role, or person.

  • Say whether you want a lookup or a change. "Show me who is past due" is a lookup. "Invite Jordan to Midtown" is a change.

  • For new training, say the audience, the goal, and that it should stay a draft until you review it.

  • Ask one clear thing at a time. "Who is past due on the alcohol course at Midtown?" works better than "give me a full dump of the business."

šŸŽÆ Example of a good prompt: "Create a 4-slide course for new hosts on greeting guests and taking names for the waitlist. Keep it as a draft. Do not publish or assign it."

How to Disconnect

Disconnect from the same place you added the connector:

  • Claude: Settings > Connectors > Opus > Disconnect

  • ChatGPT: Settings > Apps > Opus > Disconnect

Following these steps removes the assistant's access. Your Opus data is unchanged.

If you only want to stop one person from connecting, remove their Admin or Manager access in Opus. Their connection stops working.

FAQ

Do I have to use Claude or ChatGPT?

No. Any assistant that supports a custom MCP connector can use the same URL: https://api.opus.so/mcp. Claude and ChatGPT are the ones we see used most often.

Will this change anything in Opus by itself?

Not unless you grant write access and then ask the assistant to make a change. A read-only connection can never edit your business.

Are new Courses published automatically?

No. Opus leaves new Courses, Check-ins, Checklists, Documents, and Modules as drafts. Open them in Opus, review them, and publish when you're ready.

Can my team use this from the Opus app?

No. This is a connection from Claude or ChatGPT into Opus. For instant answers on the floor, use Ask Opus.

What if I see "No eligible organization"?

Your login isn't an Admin or Manager on an organization that can use the connector. Ask an Opus Admin to update your access, then try again.

What if I belong to more than one organization?

Pick the organization this chat should use on the Connect to Opus screen. To work in a different organization, add a second connection or disconnect and connect again.

Can I connect my HRIS this way?

No. Use the HRIS Integration to keep employee data in sync. The AI Connector doesn't replace that, and it doesn't write training status back to payroll or scheduling systems.

Is our data used to train other companies' models?

Opus doesn't use your business's data to train models for other businesses. The assistant you connect (Claude, ChatGPT, and so on) has its own data settings. Review those in that product. For how Opus uses AI inside the product, see How Opus Training Processes Your Company Data While Using AI.

Something looks wrong or a change didn't go through. What should I do?

Check the item in the Opus dashboard. Drafts, invites, and assignments always have a source of truth there. If something is missing or unexpected, contact support@opus.so.
