How to Score Audits: No Score, Pass/Fail, or Audit Grades

Learn how an Audit's Score Type turns step points into a pass or fail, a named grade, or no grade at all, so each submission gets the result you need.

Not every Audit needs the same kind of score. A quick walkthrough might not need a score at all, a safety check might only need a pass or fail, and a full store visit might need a scale that shows how close a Location is to great.

You decide this with the Audit's Score Type, the setting that tells Opus what to do with the points a team member earns on each step. Pick No score, Pass/Fail, or Grades for each Audit.

Table of Contents:

Score Types

An Audit's score is the percentage of available points earned across its steps. Here's what each Score Type does with that percentage:

  • No score: steps aren't totaled into a grade, and the Audit never passes or fails.

    • New Audits start with No score.

  • Pass/Fail: set a passing percentage, like 80%.

    • A submission at or above it passes, and anything below it fails.

  • Grades: the score is graded against named, colored ranges you set.

    • For example, Excellent (90% to 100%) or Needs improvement (0% to 69.9%).

    • Each grade has a name and a starting percentage.

    • A submission gets the highest grade its score reaches. Opus rounds the score to one decimal place first, so 89.96% counts as 90%.

🎯 Example: If Good starts at 80% and Excellent starts at 90%, a score of 85% is Good.

Changing how an Audit is scored only affects the draft until you publish. Published versions and past submissions keep the scoring they were submitted under.

How to Set Your Audit's Scoring

Scoring dialog with Grades and the four default grades

You set scoring in the dashboard, on the Audit's Overview tab.

  1. Open the Audit in the dashboard and go to the Overview tab.

  2. In the Settings card, click the value next to Scoring to open the Scoring dialog.

    • The value shows how the Audit is scored now, like No score, Pass/fail ¡ 80%, or 4 grades.

  3. Choose No score, Pass/Fail, or Grades:

    • Pass/Fail: enter the passing percentage, a whole number from 1 to 100. Opus shows how many points that takes, like 16 of 20 points.

    • Grades: Opus starts you with four: Excellent (90%), Good (80%), Fair (70%), and Needs improvement (0%). Rename them, change their colors and starting percentages, or click Add grade.

  4. Click Save. The change is saved to the Audit's draft, so your team keeps using the published version for now.

  5. To publish it, click Edit, then Publish.

⚠️ Publish to apply your scoring: Until you click Publish, new submissions are still scored the way the published version is set up.

While you're editing on the Build tab, the scoring badge to the right of the Audit's cover also opens the Scoring dialog. It shows the same setting, like None, 16/20 (80%), or 4 grades.

When you set up grades:

  • You need at least two grades, each with a unique title.

  • The lowest always starts at 0% and the highest runs to 100%, so every score gets a grade.

  • Percentages can use one decimal place, like 82.5%.

⚠️ One scale for the whole Audit: Grades apply to the total score and to every section. You can't set different grades per section.

Where Grades Appear

Audit submission showing the overall Outcome and a grade for each section

Opus grades each submission as soon as it's submitted. The result, whether Pass, Fail, or a grade like Good, appears wherever you see a completed Audit:

  • On the submission, in the dashboard and the Opus Training app, with a separate grade for each section when the Audit uses Grades

  • In the Audit's Reporting tab, in the Outcome column

  • In the Audit Completion Grid

  • In spreadsheet exports, and in Export PDF from a submission (overall grade only)

💡 Grades are locked in: Editing an Audit's scoring later never changes the grade on past submissions.

FAQ

Does changing the scoring affect past submissions?

No. It only affects the draft going forward. Published versions and their submissions keep the scoring they were submitted under.

Can I set different grades for each section?

No. One set of grades applies to the total score and every section.

Does an Audit with Grades still pass or fail?

No. Only Pass/Fail Audits can fail, so a graded Audit doesn't trigger anything tied to failing. Follow-up Tasks set on individual steps are still created.

Can I use custom grade colors?

No. Choose from six colors: Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Red, and Gray.

Does Opus set up scoring when it builds an Audit with AI?

Yes. When you create an Audit with AI, Opus can set a passing percentage or Grades. If it sets neither, the Audit starts with No score. Change it anytime from the Scoring row on the Audit's Overview tab.

Can I filter or count Locations by grade in reporting?

No. Reports show each submission's grade, and you can sort the Outcome column by it, but you can't filter or total by grade.

How do I see the most points a submission can earn?

On the Audit's Overview tab, the Summary card shows Max points, along with how many Triggers the Audit has.
