🗓️ Launching November 11: This article covers features launching on November 11. Admins can opt in early.

Newsfeed and Messages give your team one place for news and one for conversations, in the Opus Training app and the dashboard.

  • Use Newsfeed to share announcements and shout-outs with the Locations, Roles, or team members they're for.

  • Use Messages to talk things through in Group Messages and Direct Messages.

✅ Before you start: An Admin turns on Newsfeed and Messages for your business. Until then, you send one-way Messages.

Table of Contents:

Newsfeed

Newsfeed is where your business shares news. On Newsfeed, you can:

  • Post: send an update with a title, text, photos, and videos, to everyone or to the Locations, Roles, and team members it's for.

  • Plan ahead: schedule posts for later or save drafts.

  • Mention: @mention a team member who needs to act.

  • Talk about it: your team reacts and comments, unless you turn comments off.

  • Follow up: see who read each post, and remind anyone who hasn't.

Messages

Messages is where your team has conversations. Everyone in a conversation can reply, react, @mention, and share photos, videos, and Resources.

Group Messages

Conversations with a team, like everyone at a Location or all Shift Leads. When a group includes a whole Location or Role, anyone who joins it is added, and anyone who leaves it is removed.

Direct Messages

One-on-one conversations, like a Manager checking in with a new hire.

Where to Find Them

Newsfeed and Messages are in both the dashboard and the Opus Training app:

  • Dashboard: Newsfeed and Messages in the left nav. Newsfeed has Posts, Activity, and Preferences, plus Reported Content for Admins. Messages has Preferences and Archive.

  • Opus Training app: a Newsfeed section on Home, and a Messages tab.

Who Can Do What

Everyone can read posts, react, comment, and reply in their conversations. Posting needs the Send Posts permission, and starting a conversation needs Start Messages. Admins choose who has each.

What Changes When You Switch

If your team uses one-way Messages today, here's what's different once an Admin turns on Newsfeed and Messages:

  • Previous one-way messages become posts: one-way Messages are replaced by Newsfeed posts, and the Messages you sent before the switch show in Newsfeed too.

  • Messages are conversations: the Messages page in the dashboard and the Messages tab in the app open Group and Direct Messages.

  • Posting has its own permission: Send Posts replaces Send Messages. Managers don't have it by default, so turn it on for the Roles that should post.

FAQ

Where did my old Messages go?

They're in Newsfeed. Messages sent before the switch show there as posts, with everything sent since.

How does my team get notified?

By push notification in the Opus Training app. If a post's push notification can't reach a team member who has used the app, Opus sends a text message instead. Group and Direct Messages never send a text message, so make sure your team has the app downloaded with notifications turned on.

Can Admins read Direct Messages?

Admins can open every Group Message on the Messages page. Direct Messages they aren't in don't show there, but every message is available to your Admins through the Opus MCP or an export from support@opus.so.

Can we switch back?

No. Once Newsfeed and Messages are on for your business, they stay on.
