Getting Started: Writing Prompts for Opus AI

This article explains how to craft prompts that help AI generate accurate training modules and courses.

Written by Ben Brunken

A clear prompt gets you a first draft that's close to what you need, so you spend less time editing. Use this guide when you describe training to the Primary Agent or in a Create with AI dialog.

✅ Before you start: Admins, and Managers whose Role has the Create Content permission, can build training with AI in the dashboard.

Write Your Prompt Step by Step

Answer these questions in your prompt. You don't need all of them every time, but each one you add brings the draft closer to what you want.

Step

Ask yourself

Example

1. Define the goal

What should your team be able to do after the training?

"After this Module, new cashiers can run the register and handle customer transactions on their own."

2. Name the Role

Who is it for, and what do they already know?

"For new front-of-house team members in their first week."

3. List the key topics

What should the training cover?

"Cover station setup, greeting guests, and POS basics."

4. Set the format and length

What should Opus build, and how long should it be?

"Build one Course of about 10 screens."

5. Ask for questions and practice

How will you know they understood it?

"End with 3 scenario-based quiz questions, and add a Check-in where a Manager watches them close out the register."

6. Explain your material

If you attach something, what should Opus take from it?

"Use the attached handbook for the safety and uniform policies, and keep its exact wording."

🎯 Example: "Create a Course for new front-of-house team members in their first week. After it, they can run the register and handle customer transactions on their own. Cover station setup, greeting guests, and POS basics in about 10 screens, and end with 3 scenario-based quiz questions."

Build from Your Own Material

Adding context helps the AI create more accurate and relevant training based on your company's materials.

Attach your SOP, handbook, or slide deck instead of retyping it, and Opus builds the draft from it. In the prompt box, click Attach, then:

  • Upload files: add files from your computer. You can also drag files onto the prompt box.

  • Your Library: search or browse to add Courses, Modules, Check-ins, Checklists, or Resources you already have.

With the Primary Agent and the Create with AI dialogs, you can attach up to 10 items per message. Supported files are PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx), CSV, text, HTML, and PNG, JPG, or WebP images, each up to 50 MB or 200 pages.

💡 Say how to use it: Tell Opus which parts of your file matter, like "Pull the exact policy language from section 3."

Example Prompts

Start from one of these and swap in your own topics, Roles, and goals. Each use case shows a prompt written from scratch and one that builds on your own material. Remember, the more specific you can get with your prompt, the more impactful your training will be.

Use case

Example prompts

New hire onboarding

  • From scratch: "Create a New Hire Onboarding Module covering our brand story, mission and values, safety basics, and uniform policy. It's for new team members who don't know our brand yet. After it, they should feel ready for their first shift on the floor."

  • With your material: "Using the attached handbook, create a New Hire Onboarding Module on our brand story, culture, safety procedures, and uniform requirements. Use the handbook's exact policy wording, and point to the section where each policy lives."

Role-based training

  • From scratch: "Create a Module for a new [Role] covering station setup, breakdown, and key duties. Include 3 Check-ins. After it, they should be ready to work a shift on their own."

  • With your material: "Using the attached role guide, create a Module that breaks each duty into practical steps, with quiz questions and a Check-in for each station."

New store opening

  • From scratch: "Create a pre-opening Module with a Course for each station and a Check-in to confirm readiness. After it, team members should run their station with little support."

  • With your material: "Using the attached opening guide, focus on the show-and-tell training moments and create a matching Check-in for each one."

Refresher

  • With your material: Attach an existing Course from your Library: "Using this Course, create a short refresher on [topic] and [topic]. Make most screens scenario-based quiz questions that check what your team remembers."

Limited-time offer launch

  • With your material: "Using the attached promo guide, create a Course on what the offer is, the launch date, selling tips, and prep steps. After it, your team should know their part in the launch and where to find the details."

Policy and compliance

  • With your material: "Using the attached policy, create a Course that teaches your team how to handle [situation] and [situation], with a quiz question for each."

Career progression

  • With your material: Attach your leadership Course: "Using this Course, create a Course that prepares team members to move up to [Role], with quiz questions that show whether they're ready."

Get a Better Draft

Your first prompt starts the draft. These habits get you the rest of the way:

  • Revise instead of starting over: ask for a specific change in the chat, like "Make screen 4 shorter."

  • Ask for one draft at a time: review one draft before you start the next.

  • Talk it through: click the microphone (Dictate) in the prompt box, describe what you want, then click Stop and transcribe.

  • Describe your brand once: Admins can add details about your business in the AI Assist section of Settings > Brand. Opus uses them in every draft, so you don't repeat them in each prompt.

💡 AI drafts are a starting point: Check facts, policy wording, and quiz answers before you publish.

FAQ

Do I need to attach files every time?

No, but adding context, like guides, handbooks, or existing Courses, helps the AI generate more accurate, relevant training. Attach your own material when the training needs your exact policies, steps, or wording.

Will Opus publish the training it builds?

No. Opus builds a draft, and your team doesn't see it until you publish it.

Who can build training with AI?

Admins build with the Primary Agent. Managers whose Role has the Create Content permission build Modules and Courses with the AI Module and Course Builders.
