How to Retake a Course, Module, or Quiz

Find out when you can retake an assignment yourself, when you need a Manager or Admin, and how reassigning works.

Written by Ben Brunken

Sometimes you, or a team member you manage, needs to go through an assignment again, whether that's because they didn't pass the first time or because they just want a refresher. Who can make that happen, and how, depends on the situation.

This article covers both sides: what a Trainee can do on their own, and what a Manager or Admin needs to do for everything else.

Table of Contents:

For Trainees: When You Can Retake Something Yourself

There's exactly one case where you can restart an assignment without asking anyone: failing a Course that has a passing grade set.

Some Courses have a passing grade configured by an Admin. If you finish below that threshold, Opus automatically starts a new attempt for you right away. You don't need to wait on a Manager for this one.

  • On your phone, your completion screen will say "Not passed yet" and show a Retake course button. Tapping it drops you straight into the new attempt. There's no cap on how many times you can retake it and no waiting period in between attempts.

  • On the dashboard, this looks a little different. Your My Training page shows "Failed" with "Retake course" written out as plain text rather than a clickable button. To actually start over, reopen the Course from your training list.

If a Course doesn't have a passing grade configured, there's no way to fail it in the first place. Finishing it, however you scored, simply marks it Completed, and it can't be self-retaken.

💡 This is different from "Retry wrong answers." That's a separate setting some Courses use, and it only gives you one extra guess on a single question you got wrong. It's not a full Course retake, and it won't kick off a new attempt.

For Trainees: When You Need a Manager or Admin's Help

Outside of a failed graded Course, you can't restart something on your own, whether it's finished or still in progress. If you'd like to redo something, reach out to your Manager or Admin and let them know which Course or Module you mean.

Once they reassign it to you, you'll get a notification and it'll appear back in your Assignments as something to complete. Your earlier completed attempt stays on your record; it isn't overwritten or erased.

If you're partway through a Course right now and want a clean start, the same rule applies: you can't reset it yourself. Continue from where you are, or ask your Manager or Admin to reassign it once you're done (or, if it's a graded Course, let it come back on its own if you don't pass).

For Managers and Admins: How to Reassign

Reassigning lives in the same place as regular assigning. Which steps you use depends on what needs to be redone.

To reassign an entire Course, or an entire Module:

  1. Open the Course or Module and go to the "Manage" tab → "Assignments."

  2. Select the Trainee(s) you want to reassign to.

  3. Click "Reassign" from the toolbar that appears at the bottom of the screen.

  4. If you're reassigning a Module, you'll be asked to choose whether to reassign the whole thing or only specific Courses inside it.

  5. A pop-up shows whether the selected Trainee(s) have already completed the training or are in progress, so you know exactly what you're about to restart.

To reassign only specific Courses inside a Module someone's already assigned (without restarting the whole Module):

  1. Open the Module and click the blue "+ Assign" button in the top right.

  2. Select the Trainee(s).

  3. Turn on the toggle to reassign to Trainees who were previously assigned this Module.

  4. Choose whether to assign the entire Module or select specific Courses.

📝 What actually happens when someone is reassigned:

  • If they're in progress on a Course or Module, reassigning it means they lose their progress and start over.

  • If they've already completed it, reassigning means they take it again in full.

Want retakes to happen automatically, without doing it manually every time? Set up a recurring reassignment through Automations instead:

  1. Open the Course or Module and go to the "Manage" tab → "Assignments."

  2. Create a new Automation, or edit an existing one.

  3. At the bottom of the Automation modal, turn on "Auto reassign."

  4. Choose whether reassignment happens after completion or after a set amount of time.

This is the setup behind most monthly refresher trainings.

Keep in mind that Check-ins, Checklists, and Audits can't use Auto reassign directly. If you need a Check-in to recur on a schedule, place it inside a Module and set the Auto reassign rule on that Module instead.

Good to Know: How Other Content Types Handle Repeats

Reassignment is built specifically for Courses and Modules. A few other Opus features are designed to work differently on purpose, which is worth understanding so you know what to expect from each one:

  • Knowledge Checks are meant to be a quick, honest gut-check of what someone actually remembers, not a practice quiz. Once a Trainee submits an answer, that attempt is final; it can't be changed or retaken, and the same question won't reappear for at least 10 days. It keeps the signal accurate for both the Trainee and for Managers reviewing team performance.

  • Checklists and Audits run on schedules instead of Assignments, since they're tied to expected completion windows for a Location (like "every closing shift") rather than one-off training. If a Trainee sees "Start over" on their phone for one of these, that's just clearing an unfinished draft; it's not a retake in the training sense.

  • Paths only sequence Modules, and they're built to move Trainees forward, so a Trainee who's already completed an upcoming Module in a Path simply skips it and moves on; the Path won't loop them back into something they've already finished. If a Trainee needs to redo a Module that's part of a Path, reassign that Module the normal way.

  • A standalone Check-in doesn't have its own reassign button, since Check-ins are meant to certify a specific moment in someone's training. To have one redone, reassign the parent Module with "include check-ins" turned on, which resets the whole training moment together.

  • Unassigning a completed Assignment isn't possible, since completed training is part of a Trainee's permanent record for reporting and compliance. If something is still in progress, unassigning it doesn't erase their existing answers; reassigning it back later just picks up the same attempt unless Reassign is turned on at that point.

💡In short: Courses and Modules are the two content types designed to be retaken and reassigned. Everything else has its own purpose-built way of handling repeats, which keeps records accurate across the board.

FAQ

I'm in the middle of a Course. Can I start over from the beginning instead of finishing where I left off?

No. You'll need to continue from where you are. The only ways to get a fresh start on a Course are to have your Manager or Admin reassign it to you, or, if it's a graded Course, to not pass it, since a failed attempt automatically opens a new one for you.

If I retake a Course, will I get the same questions in the same order, or will I see the correct answers already filled in?

You'll see the Course in the same order either way. If you're fully retaking it (a new attempt from a failed or reassigned Course), your previous answers won't be shown; you're starting that attempt fresh.

If I already passed, will I still see a "Retake course" button?

No. That button only appears after a failed attempt; it doesn't show up otherwise.

Will retaking a Course remove my existing certificate?

No. If you pass on a later attempt, that attempt earns its own certificate. The one from your earlier attempt stays on your record. See How to View & Download Certificates for more.

Can we cap the number of attempts or add a waiting period between retakes?

No, this isn't something that can be configured today.

Can a Trainee retake just one Course inside a Module they've otherwise finished?

Yes. When you reassign the Module, choose to reassign only that specific Course rather than the entire Module.

Where do I set the passing grade for a Course?

This is a Course-builder setting, separate from reassigning or retaking. In the Course builder, open the Manage tab and set Passing grade as a percentage, alongside other settings like due date, certificate awarding, and retry of wrong answers. See Course Settings in How to Create and Manage Courses for the full list of options.
